Grape & Wine Capital of Oklahoma
Welcome
to Stroud!
In
2005, Stroud was recognized as the grape and wine
capital of Oklahoma. For a taste of Oklahoma wines,
two wine tasing rooms are conveniently located
on Stroud's Route 66 Main Street, with another
nearby on Hwy 99.
Stroud
is also home to Route 66 icon, Rock Cafe which
figured prominently in the planning and research
of the movie "Cars". "Sally"
was modeled after Rock owner, Dawn Welch.
Stroud
was founded in Oklahoma Territory in 1892 by James
Stroud, a trader. In its pre-statehood days, it
gained noteriety as as a "hell raising whiskey
town" for selling whiskey to cowboys and
travelers that came from neighboring "dry"
Indian Territory. At its peak, it boasted nine
saloons. However, Stroud went dry in 1907 with
the coming of statehood.
Its
early wild days were all but forgotten when Henry
Starr and his gang pulled a double bank robbery
on March 27, 1915. Starr was wounded and captured.
After serving a short sentence, he was paroled,
and starred in a film about his robbery. Falling
on hard times, the bank robber returned to his
trade and was killed during an Arkansas robbery.
